PREPOSITION

Definition: Kata yang berada sebelum noun, pronoun, noun phrase, noun clause dan gerund yang menghubungkan kata sebelum preposition dan sesudahnya.

Form: Prep. + Object of prep.                       
                       N, Pron., NP, NC dan Gerund

Kinds of preposition:

1. Based on its form (berdasarkan bentuk)
    Simple word (terdiri satu kata)   
    = on, in, to, from, at, behind, beside, via, above, up, down, with, without, after, before, since,                  for, between,… etc
    Complex word (terdiri dua kata atau lebih)
    = according to, due to, because of, next to, in front of, in the middle of…. etc

2. Based on its function
    a. Free preposition (preposisi bebas)
        Preposisi yang tidak terikat dengan kata sebelumnya
        eg.
             She sits beside me
        Preposisi 'beside' tidak terikat dengan kata kerja 'sits'
    b. Bound preposition (preposisi terikat)
        Preposisi ini terikat dengan adjective, noun dan verb

        i. Adjective + preposition
            afraid of, jealous of, angry with, interested in, bored with, be used to...etc
       ii. Noun + preposition
            comparison with, choice of, possibility of, excuse of, reason for...etc 
      iii. Verb + preposition (phrasal verb)
           Verb + preposition bisa dibagi menjadi dua jenis yaitu:
            Separable (antara verb dan preposition dapat dipisahkan oleh noun, pronoun dan noun phrase
            call up, pick up, wake up, take out, turn on,.... etc
            
            eg: 
                 I will pick you up.
                 They turn on the lamp./ They turn the lamp on.

            Unseparable (antara verb dan preposition tidak dapat dipisahkan)
            look for, look at, wait for, believe in...etc

            eg:
                 I have been waiting for you.
                 She is looking for her younger sister.
